The USS Enterprise responds to a distress call from a planet whose inhabitants have bio-engineered a microscopic organisms that scrub the atmosphere of pollutants that were choking the biosphere. Unfortunely, the organisms evolve to form a massive colony creature that is now tera-forming the atmosphere to the point where it is endangering the entire population. Capt. April assigns Lt. Spiritclaw and Ensign Chavez to take a shuttle pod and investigate the colony creature that now orbits the planet..

George Kirk and the Romulan Field Primus t'Cael are negotiating the Enterprises' return to Federation space when the Romulan crew suddenly mutinies. T'Cael's ship fires on both the Enterprise and the planetoid where Kirk and t'Cael are negotiating, marooning both men.
